Juanzhan Tenmoku tea cups are bowl shaped, but with a wide brim that allows the tea to stew and cool perfectly. They are glazed at a very high heat using a glaze with a high iron content, which creates a blackened and distinctively beautiful pattern that is unique only to Jianzhan Tenmoku pottery.

These handcrafted tea cups are excellent! The cups are the right size and the transfer of heat from hot tea is minimal so you won’t burn your hand while drinking your tea. LOVE IT! Finally put it to use today and it's super comfortable in the hand and holds a full steeping from a 120 ml gaiwan which is a nice change from the smaller cups that typically come with sets. It's hefty in the way that quality should be but not so much it's off-putting to use. The leaf inlay looks very pretty through this Moonlight White tea. Loved it so much went back and bought another one (different, of course!).

About 6 months ago, I saw a show similar to “Hows it Made”. This was dealing with how generations of families and Maker’s, were keeping tradition alive. I sat completely mesmerized as they went through the process of making beautiful Tenmoku Teacups! The process of choosing the clay and preparing it. The shaping of the Jianzhan Tenmoku, in just the right way. Then it was making and applying the ancient glaze, that must not be to thin or to thick, ruining all the work to this point, aside from creating unique designs. It’s a miracle that these beautiful cups survive the process. At anytime the entire cup can be lost.
Seeing such a a skilled technique and the beauty of these Jianzhan Tenmoku cups, the colours, the designs, I noted the name of the small group that created them. I swore that I would one day be the owner of such a cup!
The day finally cam, when I could make that promise a reality. I found the name I had noted and pulled them up online! There they were, the most beautiful teacups I had ever seen! The swirls, designs, some more abstract and others like the one I chose, deep reflective black with a golden leaf on the interior! This must surely been like a cup, only the most privileged in ancient times would have. Order placed I waited…
Finally the day came and the delivery driver handed me a small square package! My hands began to shake as I unwrapped the box! Inside was a lovely dark blue box, latched with a small clasp! Inside with soft velvet like padded interior, the colour of the earth it came from, was my cup! Holding it was like what holding a historic gem must have been like, as they were relieved from their home in Mother Earth! It nestled in my palm as if was made exclusively for me! It felt like an extension of my palm as my fingertips caressed the outside of the cup! What an incredible feeling it was!
Now, I will collect many more of these teacups, these little works of art. But do not set it on a shelf forgotten. These are meant to be used, experienced! Nothing tastes quite like the tea that has been poured into the Tenmoku!
